Rest in peace Martha "Grandma" Turner. Thank you for accepting me into your family 17 years ago. You made me feel so welcome in your home where I looked forward to a big helping of your famous chicken & dumplings and collard greens. The years when we couldn't make it, I loved being on the other end of the phone when Kevin would get you with one of his prank calls. I think it took three years before you realized that there was no such thing as a "National Turkey Survey" and that the man calling you, intent on knowing what size turkey you were cooking, was just your crazy grandson.
Two of my most cherished memories are the visits you made while we were living in Seattle and the trip you made here, to Naperville, at Christmastime. Seeing you take in the mountains in Seattle and then your first time in snow while visiting us most recently was priceless. You already had my heart but you won the hearts of all three of my brothers as well. We will all miss you terribly and feel so fortunate to have shared those days with you.
You were a fighter in life and tough up until you took your last breath. I picture you up there throwing darts, shooting pool, and playing cards...taking every last dime from anyone who is crazy enough to bet against you. My heart is heavy but I'm so happy to have so many beautiful memories that will live on. Your contagious smile, mischievous giggle, and warm presence are forever engraved in my mind. I love you.
