Fun Weekend!

We had such a great weekend.  On Friday night we ended up chilling at the house as a family.  I love it when the kids get in their "we love each other so much" moods.  It's so awesome to watch.

On Saturday we had a relaxing morning and afternoon and then had a babysitter come that night.  Some friends of ours are very involved in fundraising and in volunteering.  My goal is to be more like them and to really make an effort to give back.  They organize a pub crawl annually and turn a really good time into a way to help our local community.  Everyone who comes out makes a donation and they pick a different charity each time to donate to.  Last year they sponsored a family in need and our donations went to Christmas presents and food for the family over the holidays.  This time they donated to a camp for kids who have had a family member fall victim to murder.  Heavy stuff but such an awesome organization.  In addition to monetary donations they encouraged people to visit their wish list at Target and go above and beyond.  We took the kids and ended up buying sleeping bags.  It felt great to be able to help, even in a small way.  Kevin and I have also decided to volunteer at the camp.  I was worried about being too emotional for something like that but as our friends pointed out, it could even be volunteering to do something like take photos.  I'm really excited to be there and to be able to give back.

On Sunday we thought it would be fun to take Talan to see his first movie in the theater.  Fortunately it's a theater that doubles as a restaurant so you can eat and drink while watching.  We went to see Kung Fu Panda.  He did really well!  I'm not sure he was as into the movie as he was the food.  He put down a hot dog (while eating it he was screaming "this is the best hot dog ever!"), chicken fingers, french fries, and popcorn.  When the food was all gone he got a little restless but overall he did great.  It was so much fun to watch him watching the movie that I barely saw any of it.

On Monday Kevin went on a bike ride with friends and I took the kids into downtown Naperville for the annual Memorial Day parade.  Fortunately we didn't get dumped on like last year but I did leave their soaking wet.  This time it was from sweat.  It was so hot!  By 11am it was already in the 90's.  Check out Talan's cheeks!

The kids cooled down with a cold treat and then moved into the shade.

It's not the most exciting parade for kids - no candy or fun floats to look at - but it's such a great honor to the vets, military personnel, and a reminder of why we continue to breathe the air of freedom.

After the parade we had a quick lunch and then headed to the pool with friends.

Such an awesome, fun-filled weekend.
