We left on Sunday. Happy Mother's Day, indeed. Our flight out of Chicago and into LAX was uneventful. Because Kevin's company paid for our tickets, we decided to splurge and used miles to upgrade to first class for the trip there. It was super exciting and I am not sure that I've never felt more out of place. I kept waiting to get kicked out and told that there had been some kind of mistake but we made it the whole way without any issue. Once in Los Angeles we anxiously awaited our flight out to Maui. They began boarding and the second I got to my seat they called us back due to mechanical issues. I'm super glad that they figured out that there was something wrong before we were in the air but (a) it was a bummer that we were going to be delayed and (b) it was a not-so-fun reminder that things go wrong with airplanes all of the time. My visual was a big hole ripping open at the top of the plane. If I had been flying Southwest, the airline on which this actually happened last month, I'm not sure you could have convinced me to get on.
We were delayed about an hour (giving me more time to think about what might go wrong). I'm a terrible flier as it is. I get panic attacks and very bad anxiety whether it be a 30 minute flight or several hours long. Our flight from LAX to Maui was not only a looooooong five hours, but it was also over water. Did I mention that flying over water is my biggest nightmare? They finally lead us to a different gate and another plane. We loaded up and took off. I stupidly kept my window open and watched as we left the mainland and proceeded to have a massive panic attack when all I could see was water in every direction. Seriously?!? What happens if we need to land in an emergency? We land on water? I do not want to be floating around on a life raft in the middle of the ocean. I'm more scared of what it would feel like to float around not knowing what is underneath me in the ocean that what it would feel like to crash on land somewhere. Call me crazy. It's not the first time.
Fortunately, we were in first class and after my second glass of champagne it was much easier to relax. First class is fancy schmancy! We totally got the royal treatment. Check out our dinner menu:
Fancy or not, I was ready to land and was super happy when we finally did. It was 8PM in Hawaii but it was 1AM Chicago time so we were pooped.....but still happy enough to pose for a picture:
We couldn't see anything when we got here because it was already dark but woke up the next morning to a beautiful sight! Our hotel is bomb!
Finally, today, Kevin is able to enjoy it all. Up until now he's been stuck indoors in conferences. They did let them out to do a quick team building event at the pool. See if you can spot him:
From the beach we can see two other islands. Lanai is to the left, Molokai to the right:
It's so beautiful everywhere you look. More later. I'm excited to have this day....and to finally be able to share it with Kevin! Mahalo!!!!!!
