Making His Mark

Today was another big day in our house.  We decided to take Talan's crib apart and move in the "big boy bed".  We bought him a full sized mattress a couple of weeks ago but I had a hard time finding bedding that would match his existing wall colors.  After spending four days painting Reese's room I was not about to take on another project unless completely necessary.  Yesterday I finally found the perfect match*.

We put our very excited little guy down for his first nap in the new bed.  He went down with no trouble.  About 20 minutes later I walked upstairs and it sounded like he had gotten out of bed.  I listened at the door and heard him rustling around.  I was not at all prepared for what I was about to walk into.

Yes folks, that's a Sharpie permanent marker in his hand.  Why, you ask, did he have it in his room?  Well, when we took apart the crib, I was in charge of putting the hardware into little baggies and labeling each so that the person who bought the crib can easily put it together.  I inadvertently left it in the room in all of the "look at your new big boy bed" excitement.  Not only did he color on and ruin the four stuffed animals and pillow that he sleeps with every night but he also colored in all of the Dr. Seuss books that Kevin and I have been collecting for 17 years.  Oh, and remember that brand new comforter?  All over that, too.

Kevin and I quickly sprung into action and went straight to Google.  We found an article that recommended using rubbing alcohol.  A quick trip to the store and we were on our hands and knees scrubbing everything.  We weren't able to get it all out but we got enough out of the comforter to put it back on the bed.  If you know me, you know how bad it'll bug me every time I look at it but as long as it's in Talan's room and on Talan's bed it's not worth replacing.  Who knows what Dennis the Menace will do next.

*I am SO glad I decided against the uber-expensive Pottery Barn quilt that I've had my eye on for months.  The Target version wasn't cheap but at least it wasn't a small fortune like the one from PB would have been.
