A Penny Saved

....is a headache earned. Lesson learned. I am a poet and I didn't know it. Celebrate 33? Well poo on me. Okay, done with the rhymes. So, being the brilliant son-of-a-gun I am I thought it would be a good idea to try a night out as a family. If you cut through our neighborhood there is a cute little shopping center in walking distance. There is a movie theater, an ice cream shop, a hamburger joint, a handful of shops, and a couple of restaurants. One of the restaurants has half-priced wines and great deals on apps on Tuesday nights. Kevin worked from home today and it was a glorious day out....truly. Sun shining, clear blue skies, and upper 70's. Picture perfect. Anyway, I thought a walk to have a glass of wine and a cheap bite to eat on the outdoor patio sounded like a perfect way to kick off my birthday. So off we went at 5:30 this afternoon. We got there, ordered our wine, and as the last drop of our first pour hit the glass Talan thought it would be fun to start screaming. There were several tables of people around us and they were the smart kind of people, the kind who get a babysitter to sit and have drinks at happy hour, so we weren't going to let him wail. We took turns leaving our table and walking far enough away as to not punish the rest of the smart folk who ponied up for a sitter. Half priced wine night rules! Our thought was that a babysitter for the 2 hours we were there would have paid for two whole bottles. The kids can last a couple of hours (at least one of the two proved us right). On the other hand, it would have been worth the $20 bucks to have been able to enjoy the wine we ordered. Never again. Talan has been such a different experience than Reese was! Not better or worse, just different. We were able to bring Reese everywhere. We laughed in the faces of each and every person who gave us the "life as you know it is over when you have kids" talk. Nothing really changed for us! We brought her to restaurants, to parties, to festivals, to concerts, etc. She didn't skip a beat! If she was tired, she slept in her stroller. If she wasn't tired she would just go with the flow. Talan? Not so much. Not so much at all. Not only did he cry, continuously, for the 2 hours that we were in the hell that was UNhappy hour, but he also cried for another hour after we got home. He was tired. I get it! But really? Must you scream bloody murder for hours at a time to make me aware of that? Just go to sleep already! And here's the kicker...he was crying so hard that he couldn't really catch his breath so he couldn't eat. He kept choking on the milk when he tried. So he fell asleep without eating. Guess what that means people....Mama gets to celebrate her birthday bright and early! I bet I'll get a happy birthday wake up call at 12:01. How sweet of him. So now we're home. We didn't get to enjoy the wine at the restaurant so we looked forward to having a glass at home. Kevin went and grabbed a bottle we bought at Trader Joe's this weekend. It's called "Happiness Chardonnay". Good one. Here is how he delivered it to me! I love my hubs. Here's to liquid happiness. Let's hope that child of mine wore himself out tonight and will sleep past 3am for the first time in days. That, my friends, would be the best birthday present ever. Thanks for reading.
