Kindergarten!

What a day! Talan had Kevin and I up bright and early this morning and for once I didn’t mind one bit. I wanted to be up before Reese so that I could bare witness to her first moments on her first day as a Kindergartner. We were downstairs prepping the kitchen table when instead of a pitter patter of feet we heard what sounded like a herd of elephants! She jumped out of bed and run to the top of the stairs. Fortunately I was prepared to act quickly, grabbed the camera, and captured her excitement on camera. She was beyond excited. We told her to change into her school clothes and the next thing I saw was a nightgown flying in the air. She was off and running! We made “cubbies” in her room and labeled them Monday through Friday. I put together outfits and let her decide which days she wants to wear them to avoid a struggle in the morning. If you’re not the mother of a girl you probably don’t understand but what-to-wear is a huge battle in our house. She was excited about today’s outfit (phew!).
She would have skipped breakfast if she could have. She came downstairs ready to head out the door for the bus stop. We calmed her down enough to eat her “K” pancake although she was confused (“my name starts with an ‘R’”). After explaining that the K was for Kindergarten she was happy.
I packed her lunch (and included a note telling her that I hoped her day was going well, that I love her, and reminding her to eat). It was time to walk to the bus stop.
Here are three of the neighborhood girls who all started Kindergarten today: Reese, Ivy, & Kylie
A group shot (minus a couple of kids who hadn't shown up yet):

Lined up in anticipation:
The bus finally arrived!
She was soooo excited! Kevin and I were so giddy. We couldn't help it. She had perma-grin all morning. I felt her excitement.
It was about this time that Reese said "Daddy, that's enough pictures already!" so we reluctantly backed away from the bus (and ran to the car to follow it to school! Duh.).
Here she is lined up with the rest of the Kindergartners who rode the bus. They walked them around to the blacktop at the back of the school where they met up with their teachers.
Here is Ms. Sheley greeting Reese and walking her to her class line so that they could all walk into the school together. They only do this on the first day. Next week she'll walk straight to class from the bus.
Up until this point I was beyond great. I laughed and smiled all morning. Right about here is when the teacher said "say goodbye to the Moms and Dads kids....it's time to start school". Reese turned around, waved, and told us she loved us. She just looked SO happy! I did get a little weepy. I am so proud of her! She seemed so grown-up for such a little person.
Fortunately I was invited to join several other Moms for lunch today otherwise I don't know that I could have made it through the day. I was so anxious to hear about how it went. I couldn't wait to hear all about it. Finally, at 3:45, the bus pulled up and off she came. Notice that she is missing her backpack. Uh-oh.
She realized quickly that it was still on the bus so she made her way back to the seat to grab it. She got spooked thinking that the bus was going to pull off while she was still on it and got very upset. Like, hysterical upset.
It was downhill from there. She came home screaming and crying, obviously exhausted beyond what she had ever been before. The bus picked her up at 8:30 this morning so it was a very long day. We finally calmed her down enough to tell us about her day (which was great!) about an hour later. We walked outside and saw the most beautiful rainbow:
Reese picked a special Kindergarten dinner, sausage pizza, and we even let her have a Coke with it.
It was a special night so we figured that Talan should get a piece of pizza too!
TOTALLY KIDDING! But look at that!!! He would have devoured that thing if I let him....even without teeth. Poor guy. He was this close [ ] to having pizza for dinner and instead had to settle for liquefied sweet potatoes and chicken.
All in all, today was a success. She's already looking forward to next week. I don't get to do this again until 2014. Until then I will be making the most of every day! I gave you my version of the day in words and photos. Now it's Reese's turn:

  1. I think that Talan should have some pizza. He's clearly ready for it.
